I had the fortune of receiving a loan unit of Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM for 3 odd weeks to put the camera through its paces. I have owned the fantastic Sony Zeiss 50mm f1.4 since it came out. To be honest, I was a little skeptical if the GM could really showcase enough advantage over the f1.4 counterpart.
Once the lens arrived, it’s ergonomics reminded me of the Sony 85mm f1.4 GM. And once I got to use it on the streets, it reminded me even more of the 85 GM. The bokeh is super, super creamy. The color rendition is top notch, possibly the best among all the Sony lenses.
The cherry on the cake is the close focussing distance, it lets you focus at 40cm, compared to 45cm for the 50 1.4.
Focussing speed is extremely quick, easily the quickest among all f1.2 lenses, and most importantly the focussing is extremely accurate.
I will rather prefer you see the sample images, I hope the photos can give you an insight of the capability. I have actually ordered the lens for myself, hoping to receive it in a couple of weeks.
